Joseph Harris is out, officially, at the end of this month in Benton Harbor. The Treasury Department today named Tony Saunders II as the new emergency financial manager, effective February 1. Mayor James Hightower says it's time for a change.
City Commissioner Marcus Muhammad hopes Saunders conducts business in a different fashion than Harris does
Saunders has a lot of political experience working for the Detroit City Council and currently works for a marketing firm in Detroit. He has also been working for the Treasury Department in the Detroit suburb of Highland Park, where they have erased a $1.3 million deficit and now have a surplus of $850,000. Harris is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, and the Benton Harbor City Commission will hold a planning session, presumably about the changeover, Monday night from 5 to 7 p.m.
