Berrien County Considering Jail Renovation

Renovations to part of the Berrien County Jail are being seriously considered by the County Board of Commissioners. Sheriff Paul Bailey is seeking to get an expanded receiving area because currently, there aren't enough cells to accommodate those being arrested. Bailey tells WSJM News he's confident something will be done after years of his asking for the upgrades.

Listen:

Sheriff Bailey says it may not be for two or three years. The county would fund the project without having to turn to voters for more tax dollars, as the sheriff thinks the expansion can be done for less than five-million dollars. Bailey says with the dispatch operations moved out to another location, the room exists in the basement for building a new receiving area. The Administration Committee of the county board voted Thursday to recommend hiring an architect.
