Amtrak Making Stops in Watervliet is Far From Getting the "OK"



The possibility of Amtrak making occasional stops in Watervliet is just that...a possibility. Recent published reports suggest area resident Rick Rasmussen has been working with Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation on behalf of the Downtown Development Authority in Watervliet to establish an occasional Amtrak stop. Amtrak's Media Relations Manager Marc Magliari says though it's an idea, nothing is set in stone.

The city is currently waiting to learn if it was awarded a $520,000 state grant, which part of that would go toward a new Amtrak platform project. But even with a new platform, many other things need to happen before trains begin to stop there.

Amtrak currently rolls through Watervliet daily, traveling to Chicago from Grand Rapids once in the morning at 9:30 then back again around 8:30 p.m. with stops in Bangor and St. Joseph.
