NRC Holding Public Meeting Tonight On Palisades

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is in South Haven tonight for a public meeting on the Palisades nuclear power plant. NRC and Entergy officials will talk about the actions which have been taken to improve the performance and safety of the Covert Township plant before taking questions from the public. On November 9, the NRC concluded that the plant has addressed last year's safety problems and as a result, has been moved to what's called the performance column, which no longer would require increased oversight under normal circumstances. However, the commission will still be conducting more than 1,000 additional hours of inspections at Palisades in 2013. The reasons are to verify that the plant's actions to maintain the safety improvements are both properly implemented and can be sustained and to ensure that actions are taken for leaks this year to prevent more significant safety concerns. The public meeting will be from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the Beach Haven Event Center at 10420 M-140 in South Haven.
