Berrien County Sheriff Preparing To Handle Benton Harbor Policing



The Berrien County Sheriff's Department may be called upon to take over policing the city of Benton Harbor due to the city's money woes. Voters rejected two millage renewal proposal on November 6, cutting off half of the city's tax revenue. Emergency financial manager Joseph Harris says getting rid of all the police officers is one option under consideration, and Sheriff Paul Bailey says if that's the direction taken, they'll find a way to make it work.

Other options under consideration include special tax assessments, trying the millages again in the spring or declaring chapter 9 bankruptcy.
