Joseph Harris Lays Out Options For Benton Harbor

By week's end the City of Benton Harbor should know which avenue it will be taking to generate revenue from lost millages. On Monday, Emergency Financial Manager Joseph Harris held a press conference, or as he called it a "conversation with the media." He addressed the recent expiration of the city's millages and its debts.

Listen:

Four alternatives were presented to the media on what should happen next. The first was cutting the police department and leaving the duties to the Berrien County Sheriff's Department. The second is to have another go at the millage renewal in the spring. A public safety special assessment is the third option, and entering chapter 9 bankruptcy is the fourth. Harris did not say which option he was leaning towards, but he did express his concern to a city possibly not having its own cops.

Listen:

Harris says he's taking the various options under advisement and considering the pros and cons of each. He said a decision will be made within the next few days.
