Cook Nuclear Plant Completes Moving Dry Storage Casks Of Used Fuel



Cook Nuclear Plant has another three years of storage room now for spent nuclear fuel. Spokesman Bill Schalk says they have moved 12 casks full of used fuel assemblies since July 30. The fuel has been stored since Cook opened in a steel-lined concrete pool which has been expanded twice, but can't be made any larger.

The casks are stored on site at Cook on a specially designed, two-acre concrete pad and are built to withstand anything.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has licensed 63 dry cask storage facilities in 33 states, and there are more than 1,400 casks in service. Cook will move more casks in a few years.
