Benton Harbor Area School District has a $2 million debt hanging over its head. The debt is owed to a company that provides vendor service for the district. Sodexo supplies food, custodial, security and lunch room supervisor services for the schools, and they have notified the district they need to pay the firm in 60-days or it may discontinue its services. Superintendent Dr. Leonard Seawood says talks must continue with Sodexo because the services are needed.
Benton Harbor Area Schools has asked the state for a loan of $6 million, but were only given $2 million, which had a stipulation that the money be used only for payroll. The school district currently owes Sodexo nearly $2.15 million.
