Water rates for Fairplain residents of St. Joseph Township are just a few months from being drastically lower. Township Supervisor Tim Fenderbosch says they're just about done putting the new water lines under the river, connecting that part of the township to the city of St. Joseph's water system instead of Benton Harbor.
The water rates skyrocketed when Benton Township started its own water service and left the city of Benton Harbor's water system, taking with them major retail customers like Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Meijer. Fenderbosch estimates residential bills will fall from around 150-dollars per quarter to between 90 and $100. They're on schedule to make the switch the first week of January.
