Two St. Joseph firefighters have new roles with the department now that a new contract is in place between the firefighters union and the city. At Monday's city commission meeting, Public Safety Director Mark Clapp announced the promotions of Randy Schrubba to captain and his brother, Rusty, to lieutenant. The brothers have been part of the fire department since 1984, and commissioner Mary Goff said she's thankful for their service.
The new contract was approved by the city commission Monday night and ratified by the union last week. Among the details - it prevents the layoffs of any current firefighters until 2025, when the most recent hire is eligible to retire. The two sides had been heading for court later this month, and City Manager Frank Walsh said that would have been costly, with a $60,000 price tag for the city. Walsh said he thought the demands for job security from firefighters were reasonable. The firefighters will receive pay increases over the first couple of years, but will pay more for healthcare.
