A former Benton Harbor fire station has new life today as an apartment building. Cornerstone Alliance took the lead to develop the former fire station at 372 East Empire into a six-unit apartment building at a cost of just over $953,000, and Cornerstone's Marshall Downs says that was paid for by federal grants.
The ribbon was cut on the new homes Monday morning. In order to live in the new apartments, residents cannot earn more than about $15,000 a year, and Downs says they're meant to serve as a transition from homelessness and other struggles to self-sufficiency. Work on revamping the old firehouse started in mid-January.
