State Senator John Proos has given a check for $4,000 to Great Start of Berrien County for their annual Great Start Diaper Drive. The money came from the Walmart Foundation and the money will be used to buy diapers from Walmart. WSJM asked Proos why the retailer didn't just donate the items, and he explains it's due to the foundation being separate from the store itself.
The money will go toward purchasing 16,000 diapers, with a goal of 25,000 diapers to be given out. Last year was the first year for the program, and the organization collected and distributed over 20,000 diapers to families in need around the county. Proos gave them the check at the Walmart on South 11th Street in Niles, with the location being picked due to the store employing roughly 300 people in southern Berrien County. The diapers will be sent out to community organizations, home visiting programs and local homeless shelters.
