It was a packed house at the American Electric power conference room for the second of two debates between Congressman Fred Upton and Democratic challenger Mike O'Brien last night. The two sparred over topics from the economy to energy, with Upton saying the Keystone XL pipeline needs to be built to bring in oil from Alberta, Canada.
O'Brien disagreed, saying there aren't enough safeguards for the American public in bringing in the oil from the tar sands of Canada. He added there is no guarantee the oil will stay in the U.S. or Canada once it's refined.
The audience ignored the rules to remain quiet at one point in O'Brien's comments on energy, causing the moderator to threaten to throw out anyone who continued to cheer the answers of either candidate.
Former Marine Mike O'Brien says there are parts of the Pentagon's budget that need to be overhauled for a better and more up-to-date military. O'Brien called for changes.
Upton, who is seeking his 13th term on Capitol Hill, says his family also has a military pedigree and the 9/11 attacks had a profound effect on him.
O'Brien took issue with Upton's support of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's budget, which he says slashes health benefits and programs for returning soldiers from the war zone and other veterans. The Democrat added there are thousands of veterans in the 6th Congressional District that are not getting the care they need. Upton responded with a very contrite "I have a strong record with all of our veterans, and they know it."
