Hightower Urges Support Of Benton Harbor Millages



Voters in Benton Harbor have a lot on their shoulders on November 6. Mayor James Hightower tells WSJM there are two millage renewals that are vital to the city's finances that need to be approved, as the city is awaiting word from the state on a three-million-dollar emergency loan.

One of the renewals is for 10 mills, which is ten dollars for every thousand dollars of taxable value. Hightower says the millage is for one-point-one million dollars.

The emergency loan application is in the hands of the Michigan Department of Treasury. Emergency financial manager Joseph Harris revised it lower from his original plan to ask for seven-million in the hopes the smaller amount would be approved by the state.
