The outbreak of a rare form of fungal meningitis linked to tainted steroid shots has claimed the life of a Cass County woman. 89-year-old Pauline Burema passed away this week at the home of her daughter in Bristol, Indiana, which is near Elkhart. She had received the shots for back pain in late August and early September at a clinic in Elkhart. The Michigan Department of Community Health says no health care facilities in southwest Michigan received the tainted shots, but as Burema's death shows, some just over the border in northern Indiana did.
