Countryside Academy Elementary in Benton Harbor and Lawrence Elementary School are the only schools on this side of the state that have been selected to take part in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Building Healthy Communities program this year. Spokeswoman Shannon Carney Oleksyk tells WSJM News new studies are showing there's a big need to get kids more active and eating well to end childhood obesity and prevent it as they get older.
Overall, there are 20 schools around Michigan taking part this year. Countryside Academy and Lawrence Elementaries will be receiving the same materials and cirriculum, which Okeksyk says is valued at around 30-thousand dollars. The Blues are spending 600-thousand dollars on the program this year.
