Neighborhood watch leaders from across Berrien County are again speaking up to try to save jobs in the Sheriff's Department. County Administrator Bill Wolf is currently working on his budget proposal for the next fiscal year, and Sheriff Paul Bailey has said the amount proposed for his department would result in him having to lay off police officers. County Board Chairman Dave Pagel says he doesn't expect the sheriff's prediction will pan out.
One neighborhood watch captain stated his belief at Thursday morning's County Commission meeting that there is around 15 million dollars set aside in the contingency budget. Wolf and other county commissioners said that's not the case, and the figure is a little over one-million dollars. Wolf added the money is needed in that account to handle any adjustments that come up to the budget throughout the year without having to approve an entirely new spending plan.
