Proos Backs Child Safety Seat Legislation

Legislation sponsored by State Senator John Proos to eliminate a loophole for violations of the state's infant car seat requirements was approved on Tuesday by the Senate Transportation Committee. Proos says that Berrien County Magistrate Steven Doak testified in support of the plan:

Proos' Senate Bill 12-41 would remove a provision in current law that allows the court to waive a civil fine for a driver who violated the child safety seat law if that individual provides evidence of buying or renting a car seat before their court appearance date. According to Proos, that just means that everyone can get away with a child seat law violation. His measure is to crack down and ensure that people have their child safety seat all along. It now goes before the full Senate.
