The former Mercy Hospital building in Benton Harbor is up for auction...but it's not clear if a buyer will be found who's willing to pay to have the facility demolished. Berrien County Treasurer Brett Witkowski says that the place is basically blight, but that it would cost around a million dollars to tear it down, or even so much as get it up to code. He's not sure if the Florida company putting the building up for auction will find a suitable owner:
Witkowski says that Berrien County was angling to get a grant for the demolition of the Mercy Hospital building last year, but the bank that owns it backed out because the process was taking too long. The property on Agard Street will go up for sale on October tenth, with a minimum bid of 300 thousand dollars.
