Legislation Would Allow Retired Teachers To Serve As Substitutes



Currently, it can be difficult for a retired teacher in Michigan to come back to his or her old district and serve as a substitute because of rules about pensions. So, State Representative Holly Hughes has a plan. Under her legislation -- currently before the State House -- a retired teacher can come back to sub without it counting against their retirement pay:

House Bill 52-61 would allow retired teachers to be hired back for individual situations of need, as determined by the state superintendent, as long as they have been retired for a year or more. Hughes says that retired school teachers are ideal to serve as subs, since they already have experience and knowledge of the communities they serve.
