Three Berrien County Road Commissioners are out of office today. Former Chairman Louis Gibson resigned rather than be questioned about how the commissioners have handled the grievances of non-union employees of a hostile work environment, and the Berrien County Board of Commissioners voted to remove Road Commissioner Larry Merritt and Vice Chairman Chuck Collins. Collins was the only one who did not plead his case publicly but did speak briefly after being removed.
Road Commission Foreman Don Geisler was asked what's next for them following Thursday's action.
Collins refused to answer if he was protecting any members of Road Commission management, specifically former managing director and now finance director Rhonda Hildebrand. When asked how the Road Commission could read the independent report by consultant Charlotte Wehnham and not fire any members of management, Collins simply said "Thank you" and walked away. To give the Road Commission enough board members to have a quorum, the County Commission appointed Russ Costanza to serve through the rest of this year.
