Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors are always on site at the Palisades Nuclear Plant, but will start a new eleven-day inspection on Monday at the Covert Township facility. Last night, the NRC and Palisades leaders hosted a public meeting to discuss the plant's progress on improving its safety culture, and the NRC Regional Administrator Chuck Casto told WSJM the facility isn't perfect, but it is safe.
During the public meeting, however, longtime anti-nuclear activist Kevin Kamps repeated his desire that he wants Palisades to be shut down.
Palisades has had to be shut down twice this summer, once for a leak in a cooling tank and more recently for a leak in the control rod drive mechanism. Casto and Palisades officials say the plant was shut down as a precaution with the control rod drive mechanism leak well before it reached a level that would have prompted automatic action.
