Harvest Proving Fears Of Fruit Disaster

All is not totally lost when it comes to fruit in southwest Michigan, but it's awful close. Michigan State University Extension fruit specialist Mark Longstroth says tree fruits are very hard to find, but there are some that survived both the freezes in April and the drought.

Listen:

Grape harvest is underway, and while it will be short, the quality for both juice and wine grapes looks good. Some farms like Tree-Mendus in Eau Claire came through the weather with a decent crop, but others that don't have rolling hills got wiped out for apples, cherries, apricots and peaches. Longstroth says cranberry harvest is also being done now, and those survived just fine.
