The Palisades Nuclear Power plant is back in service after an 18-day outage. The plant was fired back up this morning and had been shut down since August 12 for repairs to a control rod drive mechanism. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokewsoman Viktoria Mitlyng says Palisades officials shut down the plant after noticing a leak, and did so before it got to the levels that would have prompted an automatic shutdown.
Spokesman Mark Savage says those sit on top of the reactor and are used to insert and withdraw control rods to control the power levels. The problem was in the primary coolant system that flows past the fuel. It was not associated with the cooling tank issue that prompted a shutdown in June and July.
