79th District State House candidate Jim Hahn says that the legislature has itself to blame for the shortfall being faced in the teacher pension fund. This week, lawmakers approved an overhaul to the retirement system that will have school employees paying more for their pensions. It'll also eliminate retiree health care for new hires. While his Republican opponent Al Pscholka has hailed the reform, Hahn says that lawmakers like Al are the reason why the state found itself having trouble paying for those retirements. He thinks that Republicans are trying to paint up teachers like they're villains:
Hahn says that public education ought to be one of the top priorities of the state government, and that it'll be harder to attract quality teachers if the legislature continues cutting their benefits. Looking at the GOP agenda in Lansing, Hahn told us that he sees in it a plan to destroy public education, in general.
