BH School Board Votes To Outsource Security And Clerical Services

In an effort to save money, the Benton Harbor School Board on Tuesday voted to privatize the security and clerical staff of the district. Superintendent Doctor Leonard Seawood told WSJM that the district will run out of money this month to make payroll, and even if it does manage to pay its staff for August, it won't be able to in September. So, officials will be asking the Michigan Treasury Department next week for an emergency loan to stay afloat. A move like Tuesday's will show state officials that the local management is serious:

The votes on Tuesday weren't without plenty of opposition. District secretaries and security representatives came out for the board of education meeting to appeal for their jobs, saying that the community won't benefit from having outside firms take over. Seawood said that local people would still be hired by these new outfits, adding that times like these do call for unpleasant decisions.
