Benton Harbor Documentary Screening This Saturday

A year in the making, a documentary on Benton Harbor will be screened this weekend at Citadel Dance and Music Center. Stevensville native Lane Blackmer and Cara Ball created the 24-minute film last year while students at Michigan State University. Blackmer tells WSJM they worked to document the situation in Benton Harbor from January to May of 2011 at what they say may possibly be the city's highest point of turmoil after the state took over the city and before Harbor Shores opened.

Listen:

Of those who would go on record, Blackmer says those who attend the screening will hear from state Representative Al Pscholka, activist Ed Pinkney, Whirlpool's Jeff Noel and Cornerstone Alliance's Wendy Dant Chesser. She said they focused on the redevelopment of Benton Harbor, with the premise that a transformation is underway, but with the question of "for whom?" The screening will be Saturday night at 7 p.m., and Blackmer says the do plan to have the film on the Internet for a short time. Just where that will go up, however, has not yet been determined. A roughly three-minute preview of the documentary is available here: http://vimeo.com/31010249
