Whirlpool on Monday announced that it will be adding at least 180 jobs to its facilities in Saint Joseph and Benton Harbor as operations wind down in Evansville, Indiana. The jobs coming to Southwest Michigan are technical and engineering related. Whirlpool is centralizing its refrigeration product development operations for North America, and the company's Jeff Noel tells us that focusing on the Twin Cities made sense:
Noel told us that, if years of work hadn't been done to develop infrastructure and property around downtown Benton Harbor, then the decision to bring these almost 200 technical jobs to the area probably couldn't have been made. Whirlpool will be investing over 18 million dollars at the Riverview property as the engineers and others from Evansville are moved into the area. Some of them may be new recruits, and others may be transplants from Indiana. The company is still working that out.
