This is National Health Center Week, when community health centers across the country celebrate their workers and reach out to let others know the role they play in providing health care to those with no insurance. Here in Southwest Michigan, Intercare fills that role, and is marking the occasion by holding employee appreciation events and also offering some free screenings in some locations. Intercare's Velma Hendershott:
She says that, in this healthcare environment, community health centers offer a much better option to the poor than the usual "run to the emergency room" method of dealing with illness. The National Association of Community Health Centers says that by keeping people out of emergency rooms and caring for chronic illnesses before they turn into emergencies, the centers save the healthcare system over 24 billion dollars annually.
