Van Buren Official Talks Road Millage

Next month, voters in Van Buren County will decide the fate of a road funding millage that's been on the books since 1978, and road commission officials are urging them to renew it. The millage is a substantial part of the road commission budget, and is viewed as vital for keeping roads maintained in villages and townships all across Van Buren County. Engineer Larry Hummel says that much of the money collected goes right back into the communities that pay it:

The millage money is also used for road preservation projects, and helps make Van Buren County eligible for hundreds of thousands in matching funds each year. On the ballot will be a four year renewal of the tax, which would cost the owner of a home with a taxable value of 45 thousand dollars about 44 dollars a year. The vote takes place on August seventh.
