Clean The Galien



There continues to be problems with poop and other waste in the Galien River. Kris Martin of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission says they're battling the issue with billboards on U.S. 12 and Red Arrow Highway, radio ads and a Facebook page.

The message to homeowners is to keep their septic systems maintained to prevent the "trickle down" of the waste products from getting into the water. About one-thousand homes are suspected of contaminating the Galien River with E. colli, which can kill fish, get people sick and result in closed beaches. Martin says for people who can't afford the repairs or to have their septic tank pumped out, there are loans available through the USDA.
