The city of South Haven hopes to soon be upgrading the Van Buren State Trail into the city limits. The city council this week has approved applying for $990,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Community Transformation grant program. Most of the cash would be used for infrastructure improvements to parks, pedestrian walkways and trails, and no local money would be spent. City Manager Brian Dissette says completing the trail, which runs from South Haven to Hartford, is top on the priority list from the money. Dissette adds he does not know what sort of competition the city is up against nationally, however. The CDC is expected to issue the grants later this year.
