US Senator Debbie Stabenow spent her Monday meeting with fruit farmers, first in Bangor and then north of Grand Rapids, to see first hand the damage caused by the unusual spring weather. Stabenow chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee and was able to get relief for Michigan growers into the 2012 Farm Bill, currently before the U.S. House.
Stabenow says farmers in 72 of Michigan's 83 counties qualify for the state and federal help. Nearly all of Michigan's tart cherries, grapes, apples and apricots were wiped out by a warmer-than-average March and several freezes in April. There are still some farms in the area that have a crop, and growers urge that you call the farms you normally buy from in the fall to see what sort of crop they will have.
