St Joseph Looking To Better Regulate Fireworks



If you like to set off fireworks, your timeframe to do so in the city limits of St. Joseph could be about to shorten up. The City Commission is looking into banning their use outside of ten national holidays as set up by the state's new relaxed law on fireworks. Community Development Director John Hodgson presented the ordinance to commissioners last night, saying setting off fireworks would be a misdemeanor, while sparkler use outside of the holidays would be a civil infraction.

Local governments are not allowed to enforce local laws against the use of fireworks on the day before, day of and day after national holidays. After the Fourth of July holiday last week, some state lawmakers say they want to revisit that part of the statute.
