The battle between the city of St. Joseph and its firefighters union is now in the hands of lawyers. City Manager Frank Walsh will be contacting the Michigan Employment Resolution Commission concerning the union's attempts to seek arbitration to get rid of the contract agreed to earlier this year combining the city's police and fire departments into a department of public safety.
Walsh closed last night's city commission meeting with the remarks about the dispute, adding he won't be saying anything more about it until after the legal battles have been waged. WSJM has attempted to contact the lawyer for the firefighters union, but our calls have not been returned. The union threatened to sue the city to block implementation of public safety, which went into effect on July 1.
