The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has opened up a new investigation at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant due to a leak in a cooling tank that has had the facility shut down since June 12. NRC spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng says they want answers about what led to the latest mishap, especially seeing that Palisades was shut down five times last year.
The NRC has been working with Palisades to improve its safety culture. Officials at the plant said they thought the leak in the cooling tank had been fixed earlier this week, but as they were refilling it on Tuesday the problem was still there. Palisades spokesman Mark Savage says at this point, they don't know exactly how long the repairs will take or how long the plant will be idled.
