Palisades Disputes Comments By Massachusetts Congressman

The tank leak that shut down the Palisades nuclear power plant has the attention of at least one member of Congress. Democrat Ed Markey of Massachussetts is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and is looking for answers from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission about the threat posed by the leak and shutdown. He has sent a letter to the NRC calling the leak quote, "a serious safety issue," something plant spokesman Mark Savage says is simply not true.

Listen:

The leak is still being repaired, as problems persisted after the tank was beginning to be refilled Tuesday night. In a statement, Congressman Markey alleges the leak has been a problem for a year and puts public safety at risk, both of which Savage also denied. Congressman Fred Upton, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, says he's not surprised by Markey's criticism.

Listen:

The NRC has extra inspectors on site at Palisades to monitor the plant's progress following several issues in the past few years.
