U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is thrilled with Senate passage this week of the 2012 Farm Bill, which includes some of the biggest reforms to farm programs in decades. Michigan's junior Senator tells WSJM there is help being offered in the bill for fruit growers in our state who had their crops wiped out due to the spring weather this year.
Those include tart cherry growers, who are expecting to harvest only about two-million pounds of cherries. A typical year normally results in around 95-million pounds of the fruit. Stabenow adds there will be other help for apple growers and grape growers, as they have crop insurance available but it won't cover the losses. She says those details are still being worked on with the U.S. House. Stabenow expects the House to vote on the Farm Bill in early to mid-July, and then the two pieces will be meshed together in conference commitee.
