Whirlpool Donation To Benton Harbor To Be Spent On Fixing Community Pool



A 200 thousand dollar donation from Whirlpool to the city of Benton Harbor will be spent on fixing the out of service swimming pool at the Charles Gray Rec Center. On Thursday, Mayor James Hightower addressed a crowd at the pool:

He presented a ceremonial check of 190 thousand dollars to leaders of Benton Harbor Schools. Also on hand was Berrien County Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough, who praised the plan to get the pool working again:

School Board President Anthony Jett said that getting this swimming pool up and running again will benefit the whole community:

The majority of the city commission has expressed opposition to spending most of the donation on fixing the pool, but Mayor Hightower told us that a recent meeting with Whirlpool representatives, himself, and Emergency Manager Joseph Harris allowed for the impasse to end:

The pool, once fixed, will be maintained and operated through a committee to be set up by the Benton Harbor School Board. The recreation center was built in the 70s, and the pool there has been out of operation for a few years now.
