A cleanup effort will be held next week at Silver Beach with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Southwest Association of Michigan Realtors and Barefoot Wine. Jamie Cross is the Adopt-a-Beach manager for the Alliance and tells WSJM this is the second year they've held a cleanup in St. Joseph.
Cross says most of what they normally pick up is smoking-related, with food litter being the second-most-common trash left behind by beach goers. She says the county does a very good job of keeping the beach clean and their efforts are meant to both supplement those and study what people don't bother to throw away. In 2011, more than 8,000 Adopt-a-Beach volunteers removed nearly 33-thousand pounds of trash at 254 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. The event next Wednesday starts at 6 pm with an afterparty for volunteers 21 and over from 7:30 to 8:30. Cross says while the after party is adults-only due to the wine sponsorship, all ages are welcome to help with the cleanup.
