Watervliet Twp Methane Power Facility Moves Forward

The Watervliet Township Board of Trustees this week voted to hold a first reading on a zoning change that will be needed to build a new facility at the local landfill that could turn methane gas into electricity. Supervisor Dan Hutchins tells WSJM that Granger Energy Solutions, out of Lansing, wants to produce the power and sell it back to other utilities. Members of the township board recently toured another Granger plant and found that it generates no unpleasant odor and creates little noise:

Hutchins says that some residents have expressed concerns that the Granger station would become a nuisance, but township board members don't believe that will be the case. The next step for the project to go through is for the township to hold a second reading on the zoning change, and issue Granger a special use permit. Everything could be in place in April.
