Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey is asking the county commission to study renovating and possibly expanding the jail. County Administrator Bill Wolf said renovations are in the works, but not a full replacement of the facility at this point.
Bailey outlined his needs for the renovations this week to the county board. One problem is not having enough space to book inmates and not having any padded cells for prisoners who show destructive behavior. The sheriff gave the board a report outlining what needs to be taken care of at an estimated four-million-dollars. The cost of building an entirely new facility was projected to be about 40-million dollars a few years ago. Sheriff Bailey said the crowding issue is especially apparent over the weekends when as many as 80 people are booked and the temporary holding area is too small to hold them.
