A Stronger Auto Industry Could Soon Benefit SWM



The Big Three automakers have been gaining in strength lately, and the effects are starting to be seen in areas of the state where they have the biggest presence. But what about Southwest Michigan? George Erickcek, with the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, tells WSJM that places like Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids have already seen some auto industry jobs growth:

As for Berrien County -- Erickcek says that there are some auto suppliers here, and he expects them to feel the trickle down benefits of increased American car sales in the coming year. Erickcek also notes that there would also be secondary benefits from stronger auto hiring, telling us that sectors like healthcare and hospitality could eventually grow, as well.
