Tuesday was the first day that middle school students in Benton Harbor attended classes at the high school building. In order to save money to avoid a state takeover, the district has closed Fairplain Renaissance Middle School and shifted the seventh and eighth graders over the Benton Harbor High. Superintendent Doctor Leonard Seawood tells us that the first day under this new arrangement went smoothly, as much preparation had been done in anticipation of it. He notes that the middle school kids are being kept totally separate from the high schoolers:
Seawood said that there's plenty of room at the high school, as it was built at a time when Benton Harbor had far more students. He also said that the district leadership has been in contact with parents, trying to ease their concerns and assuring them that this change is strictly temporary.
