Experts Question Cyber School Legislation



Legislation now being considered in Lansing would allow full time cyber schools to expand their enrollment in Michigan, but some education experts wonder if those schools have really proven themselves to be effective yet. Online learning has been touted as a way for cash-strapped states like Michigan to educate kids while saving money, but a new report by education professors from the University of Colorado finds that there's no reliable evidence showing such institutions are as good brick-and-mortar schools. Teri Battaglieri, of the Great Lakes Center for Education and Research, says she's just not comfortable with all the unknowns in the cyber school equation:

Cyber school advocates say there are benefits to a virtual learning environment in an increasingly technology-driven society, and many education experts do support using online learning as a supplemental tool. Right now, full-time cyber schools are operating in 27 states.
