One in four older Michiganders depends on Social Security as their sole source of retirement income. That's the finding of a study being released this week by the Michigan Elder Law Center. The Elder Economic Security Standard found that seniors who get only Social Security can't keep up with Michigan's high cost of living and medical expenses. Kate White is executive director of Elder Law of Michigan, the non-profit advocacy agency that sponsored the report. She says the study found the statewide average expenses for a single retiree with no mortgage is about 17-thousand dollars a year and for women it can be worse:
White says seniors are relying more on family, dropping health care policies, allowing their property to go into foreclosure or not paying their taxes to make ends meet.
