Whirlpool Fort Smith Sale Falls Through

Whirlpool's former Fort Smith, Arkansas refrigerator plant remains on the market. The "Fort Smith Times Record" is reporting a tentative sale of the site to Infinity Asset Solutions of Canada has fallen through, citing the chief operating officer of the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce. Six years ago, 46-hundred people worked at the plant, and it closed in June with 800 workers when Whirlpool sent the work to Iowa and Mexico. Tim Allen of the Fort Smith chamber says the Canadian company withdrew the offer, but he's not been able to reach anyone from Whirlpool or Infinity to discuss what happened. Allen adds they're working harder to find jobs for the former plant workers than they are on finding a new buyer for the facility. It opened in 1962, and Whirlpool bought it from Norge Company in 1966.
