Upton's Drug Quality And Safety Act Passes House

Legislation is headed to the U.S. Senate to prevent a repeat of a meningitis outbreak from tainted steroids. Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph is the lead sponsor of the bill, which received bipartisan support in the House over the weekend.

Upton called the deaths and illnesses preventable.

19 of those killed were from this state, with three from southwest Michigan. Upton's bill protects the drug supply chain against counterfeit medication, eliminates red tape impacting Michigan businesses like Perrigo and Pfizer and clarifies the FDA's authority over drug compounding. Upton says it will protect local compounding pharmacies, but crack down on big ones like the New England Compounding Center.
