The Obama administration now says it supports allowing cell phone users to switch their devices to any mobile carrier. Over 100-thousand people have signed an online petition protesting the recent ban on unlocking cell phones. Congressman Fred Upton says it makes sense to relax the restrictions.
Officials in the telecom industry had said since carriers were already dealing with massive subsidies on new cell phone purchases linked with long-term contracts, they should be "locked" or kept from moving across networks. It's not yet known if the White House will propose legislation, which would be addressed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee chaired by Upton.
