Correcting the past. That was one of the themes to last night's town hall meeting in Benton Harbor, where Emergency Financial Manager Tony Saunders addressed the public about the city's finances, then took questions. Saunders and his staff gave a financial presentation, covering the city's cash balances, fund transfers and the year to date budget. Mayor James Hightower says the citizens have wanted this information for some time.
The city is on pace to spend at least $600,000 more than it's budgeted for. Saunders says planning next year's budget needs to happen as soon as possible.
Saunders plans to hold more town hall meetings with the intent of sharing a proposed budget with the public, giving residents the opportunity to draft their priorities on what the city should do next year.
